On beanies.

One of the most obvious street style trends that emerged during New York fashion week was the beanie.  I feel rather ambivalent about the revival of the beanie.  Don’t get me wrong, there is a time and a place for this very practical accessory.  Like if you’re casually dressed and wandering over to your local coffee shop, book store, farmer’s market, etc on a particularly cold Sunday morning.  Or if you’re skiing.  Or a gangsta.  However, I just can’t help but feel that wearing a beanie with an otherwise perfectly chic outfit is inappropriate.  The beanie may be many things, but chic it is not.

If you’re in need of some alternative headwear inspiration, check out lovehats.com.  Here you can find a wide variety of all kinds of accessories to adorn your head for just about every occasion.  Plus, they provide a virtual ‘try on a hat’ service and a mobile phone app that are both pretty awesome.  Some of my personal favorites:

And if you absolutely insist on wearing a beanie, they do have a small selection which are far more inspired than most seen on the streets during this season’s fashion weeks.  My personal favorite is this cross between a beanie and a turban.  More on turbans later…

And then there’s this veiled beanie for the more adventurous.  Or if you’re Anna Dello Russo.
